Answers To Frequently Asked Questions At Rhema Counseling Associates:

What is a rhema?

RHEMA (Greek: rhema) means “word” A rhema is an inspired, sort of “ah-ha” and serendipitous moment or understanding given to us as we read God’s word or receive wise counsel.

Every word of God is inspired, and in 2 Timothy 3:16, Paul tells us that “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness”.

How did RHEMA Counseling Associates begin?

Years ago, when our blended family was struggling through a particular crisis, we sought counseling and we asked Pastors and Professionals we knew to recommend someone who would counsel us using the Word of God throughout the process.  ONE person recommended ONE person and he was located almost 2 hours away and was booked solid.  We found counselors on our own and were helped, but didn’t experience the lasting heart change we had hoped for.  About 2 years later, we were painfully back in the midst of the same trial and had dug a pit even deeper than before.  By that time, God had introduced me to a wonderful group of Biblical Counselors and not only was I on my way to becoming a Biblically-Focused Counselor myself; we sought wise counsel as a family and were changed and have rarely even looked back!  We are so grateful to God for this help!  And this is really how RHEMA Counseling Associates came about! For more information about Karen go to www.rhemacounseling.com/karen

How did you create your RHEMA Counseling Associates logo?

I (Karen, RHEMA Founder) took my three young children to grief support when their father, Tim, died after a 4 year battle with 3 cancers.  Fred took his three teenagers to grief support when their mother, Cathy, died of a heart attack.  Fred and I married 2 years later.  When people see a picture of our family, they often comment, “Hey!  Y’all are like the Brady Bunch!”  And if you look at our RHEMA Counseling Associates logo, you’re actually seeing our family!  We are standing on the foundation of and are surrounded by the Word of God.  What better foundation for growing a family could there be?

What are RHEMA Counseling Associates’ mission and vision?

RHEMA Counseling Associates’ Mission through counseling, coaching and supervision is to glorify and honor the Lord as we lead each other and our counselees to the Sovereign God and the cross and Life of Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit and equipped with the Sufficient Word [rhema] of God for abundant life and ministry to others.

Rhema Counseling Associates Vision:  Our counsel is based on a commitment to ministering the Word of God in such a way that all of life is illuminated by His eternal truths. Our counsel rests on the Wisdom of God. We seek to embody the person of Jesus Christ by extending His compassion, love and patience to all who call on us for help. If Christ is not reflected in our words and attitudes then it is our conviction that we have failed in our role as Biblical Counselors.

What is Biblical Counseling?

Biblical Counseling involves discipleship and education and wise counsel. It is the personal ministry of the word through conversation and counseling. Every Christian is called to speak the truth in love to his neighbor and help them grow in grace. Believers should desire to apply the Bible to every area of life. The goal of Biblical Counseling is to present everyone mature in Christ by teaching with all wisdom.

Romans 5 tells us how to have HOPE and Peace with God through Faith

5 Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we[a] have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. 2 Through him we have also obtained access by faith[b] into this grace in which we stand, and we[c] rejoice[d] in hope of the glory of God. 3 Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, 4 and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, 5 and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.

Cash Options / Cost & Benefits of NOT participating in private insurance:

No diagnosis needed:
Services are not contingent upon a diagnosis. Insurance companies require a diagnosis in order to receive financial reimbursement for counseling. They do not reimburse for all coaching and for some counseling services. Counseling/coaching can benefit anyone, with or without a diagnosable illness.

Your privacy is protected:
Insurance companies require information about their clients’ diagnosis, qualifying symptoms, and work in counseling. Bypassing insurance companies allows strict confidentiality. No information is shared with anyone unless requested in writing by the person served.

Service / time-frame are your decision:
The type of service you need and the time frame in which it is provided is a decision made between all partners in the therapy process, based on direct experience, rather than the insurance company deciding the amount and level of coverage.

Do you take Insurance?

RHEMA does not currently participate in managed care agreements with insurance companies. We will provide you with a RHEMA invoice for you to submit to your provider for reimbursement to you. The full payment is due at the time of service even if you are going to file with a third party.

RHEMA Counseling Associates Insurance Procedure

RHEMA Counseling Associates will provide an insurance-ready invoice to the client at each session. If you have a major medical policy that covers outpatient mental health and you wish to use this policy, please note the following: your counselor is not responsible for confidentiality procedures employed by other parties, e.g., insurance companies, managed care companies, etc. Due to the fact that other parties often create computerized records, your counselor is unable to guarantee the confidentiality of your records should you use your insurance company to subsidize the cost of therapy services. If your choice is to use insurance, you are responsible for completing and filing insurance claims using the RHEMA Counseling Associates invoice. If insurance is used, a Release of Information form will have to be signed authorizing your counselor to release necessary diagnostic, clinical and treatment information to your insurance company.

Confidentiality: If you choose to use insurance or managed care companies, your counselor will be required to assign a DSM-V Diagnosis to you; and your counselor may be required to release confidential information in order for you to receive reimbursement.

Do your Biblical Counselors council or coach by phone?

Most of our counselors prefer to counsel face-to-face. In most cases, we would rather give you a few referrals to offices and counselors in your area who offer the same Biblical approach to counseling that we do, than to counsel by phone. However, a few of our counselors (Karen and Jeff) do counsel by Skype and FreeConferenceCalling.com and through online Webinar venues and by phone.

Karen does a significant portion of RHEMA Building Inspired Businesses Coaching by phone through FreeConferenceCalling.com so that your session can be recorded and you can listen to it again at a later date.

How do I know if I need counseling?

Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?  Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him, my salvation and my God.  (Psalm 42:5, 11; Psalm 43:5)

It’s very common to sometimes feel sad, lonely, and unhappy [especially during the emotion-riddled holidays]. And depression is a catch-all phrase in todays’ culture.  But how do you know if you need professional help?  How do you respond rightly to God in the midst of deep despair?  Where do you find hope and joy again?
